The National Electrical Code or (NEC ®) has a NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) (Click here to learn more about NFPA) designation of NFPA 70. The purpose of the NEC is for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment. The national electric code was first published in 1897 and has been published every since in three-year increments. The NEC is a model code and commonly mandated by state or local jurisdictions, as well as in jurisdictions outside of the US. The NEC codifies the requirements for safe electrical installations into a single, standardized source and is approved as an American National Standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
